Important Band Announcement
9/29/09

After a lot of careful thought, Liam has decided to move on from the band.

For 5 years, Liam has been an amazing bassist and bandmate ... and for the last 15 years, he has been a great friend. He will remain an important part of our lives and our creativity, as we continue writing new Facing Winter music.

We will play at least one final show together soon (details to come).

And although Liam's role with the band will be reduced, we will always consider him part of the FW team and family. We wish Liam the best of luck as he pursues a new way of life. We are sad to see him go ... but excited for the future.

Love wins, and so does Facing Winter. Get ready for new music!

Tour Plans: 2009
New Album First, Then Two-Week Tour
6/15/09

see big image in new window

The first half of the year has flown by! Can you believe we are halfway through 2009? As many of you know, we've been very busy playin shows, workin on the new album, bookin our summer schedule, and arranging a fall tour. Momentum is building and the future looks bright!

Right now, we're more than halfway done with "Gifts From Gravity," which will be our second full-length album. It's coming along nicely, and we feel strongly that it will be our best work yet. Our plan is to finish and release it to the masses as soon as possible ... look for it in your hands by late summer.

We would also like to announce that plans have changed for our fall tour. As much as we would love to take a phatty road trip to the West Coast, we've realized that realistically we are not going to be able to afford it. The combined cost of releasing the album and touring the West Coast would be a bit too much for us to handle.

But the rock must go on ... so we will be playing a 16-day Midwest tour instead.

We would like to apologize to our West Coast friends and fans. Sorry to get your hopes up. We miss you. And we appreciate you very much. A California tour is still in the works ... but for now, it will have to wait until at least 2010.

Nonetheless, we are still very excited about our new plans, and looking forward to traveling through Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Michigan. Let us know if you live in one of these states, 'cause we'd love to play at your favorite venue with your favorite local band. Any other info regarding venues, routes, places to sleep, etc. would also be extremely helpful.

As always, thank you for all your encouragement, enthusiasm, and support ... it means the world to us.

   See you soon!

"MOONSHINE" AND MORE ON THE FW MYSPACE!
4/20/08

Facing Winter is just bursting with new music.

Now "Moonshine" – and a rotation of other tunes from the new album – can be heard at the FW MySpace. Free and easy. No downloads. Note: You do not have to be a MySpace member to view this page and hear the music.

Post a comment there and let everyone know what you think. Or send a message or email. How do the songs make you feel?

This version of "Moonshine" is basically the first official mixed and mastered draft, so slight changes are still possible.
The song is one of 12 tunes on Seas Drain Into Space, Facing Winter's debut full-length due out in mid-2008.
It will include the likes of "Colorful", "Bad Idea", "Dramatic" and "New Explosion".

Album Status Update: Mixing. Only two songs left to mix! The album will be done within a month!

   Let the bursting commence ...

BIG NEWS
Feb. 16, 2008

FW & friends are finalizing and mixing Seas Drain Into Space, the full-length debut album. Expect it mid-2008.
The quick fix for the time issue is a tiny taste of the album: a slappin-new song (or two) will show up on the FW MySpace within, oh, three or four days.

The song(s) will only be available there. It's also the bumpin' party zone for all the latest FW music and news.

Album Status: Mixing. This will take a little while. Hooray for plugins, reverbs, gates and gains.

As for here, expect to see some album artwork and other neat stuff in the coming days and weeks. And shows. Definitely happening, hopefully in the so-near future (like maybe March/April).

   More to come. Stay tuned.

       Hooray!

All recording for The Sanctuary EP is finally finished! After all the vocals, guitars, bass, drums and miscellany, the only tasks left are mixing and mastering.

You'll be able to get the disc when it's pre-released in May. That way, it'll be going to our friends, acquaintances and other folks we meet at shows 'n such.

Speaking of shows, we're looking forward to seeing lots of old friends and meeting plenty of new people this spring and summer. A slew of shows is taking shape ... expect an announcement of all the dates within the next couple of months.

One more note about the Sanctuary EP – we'll post its pre-release date soon. The official release will happen in late summer, probably Augustish. The bottom line: Soon we'll finally be able to share six long-simmering songs – such as "290," "Anarchy" and "Liars" – that best reflect our current direction. Two-and-a-half years of our focus, excitement and dedication will culminate with this disc.

You'll be hearing from us again soon!

       Greetings!

Be sure to join us for a special free show on Friday, March 10th, in the good ol' western suburbs! Well, Geneva, to be specific. It'll be a Gojangle production.

The show info is waiting for you; just hop on over to the shows page.

As far as the Sanctuary EP goes, we're about 80 percent finished with the recording process. We were able to stay on schedule, so the EP will be all dressed up and ready for listening in April.

Oh, and if you're not on the mailing list, you should totally visit the sign-up page and get connected. It's good for reminders about shows and such.

       Peace out!

We're hunkered down for the winter, toiling and recording when not enjoying the holidays.

Speaking of holidays, we can't wait to let the music flow at Jodi's New Year's bash. Chris Darby will be joining us for this special, certainly festive occasion. Some photos should make their way online sometime soon.

We'll let you all know when more shows are scheduled. Look for one at the Blue Iguana (in Wrigleyville) sometime this spring/summer.

Also make sure to check out the new music on the listen and film music pages. They're outfitted with three new full-length songs and 11 new film-soundtrack tunes.

If you're looking for something more, there's always the new photos!

       Take care, be safe.

       Fresh material abounds!

The site's now outfitted with three new, full-length songs ... 11 new film-soundtrack tunes ... and 24 new photos. We're definitely excited to share all this new material, so take a moment to check it out.

Otherwise, recording is going well for the forthcoming Sanctuary EP. It'll be out sometime in spring '06, featuring five brand-new songs. So far, "Inertia" is about 90 percent recorded and some of the music for "290" is complete. Next on the block will be "Liars," followed by "Tightrope" and "Anarchy."

The next live show will be Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Pint on Chicago's North Side. It's free and won't start too late, so grab some friends, hang out and say hello to Justin, Liam and I.

In other news, we recently climbed out of a portion of the Internet Stone Age. You now can sign up for our mailing list just by typing your e-mail in a box. Woo-hoo! So ... we won't mind if you refer some friends who haven't heard our music yet.

Thanks for your time and attention ... Peace out!

This weekend we finished guitar, bass, drum, keyboard and percussion tracks for "Inertia." It'll be one of roughly five songs on the Sanctuary EP, due out in early 2006.

Up next will be "290" and "Liars." You could say Justin, Liam and I will be focusing on recording for the next few weeks.

We'll be back on stage on December 21st for a Free Show at Pint in Chicago. It'll be presented by Gojangle. All the details are on the shows page.

Hopefully we'll see you there. Besides, by the time it's December 21st in the ol' Midwest, we'll all be itching to get out and enjoy a nice night amongst friends.

       Later!

Who doesn't love a good surprise?

The Gojangle showcase in Chicago has been postponed to sometime later this year. Specifics will be available soon.

This means one thing for us: Time to get back in the studio!

We're going to get started recording "Inertia" here in a couple of weeks, with "Anarchy" and others on the menu for what will become the Sanctuary EP.

By the way, we've fixed a little glitch that was bouncing some e-mails back to their senders. So feel free to send any random thoughts or thoughtful rants to theband@facingwinter.com. Or use an individual address if you'd like to be discreet (see the contact page).

       Peace out!

OK, OK. So what if we inadvertently fibbed?

Two weeks ago we yapped about playing our last show for 2005 (so we could focus on new music and recording).

       But then there was Thax.

Mr. Douglas will present an evening of music on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Beat Kitchen. If you know Thax, you know why we didn't want to miss it. If you don't, you should. The details are on the shows page. For more about Thax, click him in our links.

In other developments, we're steadily building a presence on MySpace. If you haven't signed up yet, do it because many of your friends already are there.

On an administrative note, our email list now is being sent from news@facingwinter.com. You may want to add it to your address book to avoid any unintended spam blockage.

       Have a good day!

We’re on the cusp of a stage of all-out writing, practicing, improvising and striving to create quality music.

But to get there, we have to play the last Facing Winter show of 2005.

It’s this Friday, Sept. 16, at Phyllis’ Musical Inn in Chicago. And it’s Free! It’ll give you an extra couple bucks for an extra couple drinks.

The music’s starting at 9 p.m. It’ll be our pleasure to share the stage with our good friends (and newly minted five-piece) Them Damn Kids. For all the info and links to everything, see the shows page.

So why is this the last show for the year? It’s all about that stage I mentioned earlier. And during the inevitable little breaks from that stage, we’ll be recording some existing songs for a forthcoming EP. If all goes well, we’ll be asking you to listen to it by spring 2006.

As some of you may already know, Facing Winter has been working on music for a feature-length film, "Say Hello to Clive for Me." Nearly all of the music is written and recorded, the scenes have been shot and the movie is in post-production.

We’re told the film will be submitted to this year’s Sundance festival, as well as other festivals around the country. Stay tuned to this page for updates and more downloadable tracks from the movie (to hear the first two, see the news archive).

Also online, we finally joined the surprisingly vast MySpace community. It’s pretty wild, because it seems like everyone’s there already. So help us spread the love by visiting our profile and adding us as friends.

Thanks for sharing your time with us!

Summer in Chicago – the perfect time to enjoy some nightlife, good company and live music. At least, that's what we're thinking.

So we're all stoked about three shows coming up over the next six weeks, starting this Friday at Tonik. A comfortable Forest Park tavern renovated earlier this year, it's nicely located a few miles west of downtown. We're looking forward to re-breaking it in.

While we haven't played a show since early June, the past few months have been productive. We've been writing and recording brand-new songs for the soundtrack of an independent film called "Say Hello to Clive for Me."

For a taste, check out these two demos (mp3s), which are early versions of songs that will be used in the film:
             – Idea 03 (1:19)
             – Idea 09 (1:31)

Our next EP is chuggin' along as well. We're polishing up the songs to prepare for recording in a few weeks, with a hopeful release this autumn.

Thanks for your support, and take care!

Since releasing the "Apple EP" in May, we've been playin' some shows and working on a friggin' kaleidoscope of new material.

Right now, Justin's polishing up some demo tracks for an independent action film called "Say Hello to Clive for Me." Liam and I are jammin' some bass and hand-percussion ideas to round out the songs, which will be featured in this production by Backburner Films.

If you'd like a taste, download these mp3s:
             – Idea 03 (1:19)
             – Idea 09 (1:31)

On the band front, we're writing and recording material for the upcoming "Sanctuary EP," featuring songs like 'Colorful,' 'Anarchy' and 'Inertia.' We've got '290' in the vault so far. The five-song disc will be out later this year.

We also freshened up the site design and graphics. Although, the ever-lagging 'photos' page still needs an overhaul ... that's coming soon.

       Peace!
